Florence in October: highs around 21–22 °C, sweater evenings, about 9 wet days on 105 mm. Perfect for walking Duomo–Oltrarno without heatstroke; Piazzale at sunset stays pleasant. Florence in November: drop toward 15–16 °C highs, peak rain (115 mm): prioritise museums, portico cafés, serious waterproof. December–February: damp cold, not alpine; January highs ~11 °C.
Museum seasonality: fixed prices, variable slots
From 2026 the Uffizi list no longer shows historic winter low season: €25 year-round at the desk, €29 advance; from 16:00 entry at €16/€20 (from 1/1). Accademia €20 year-round (+€4 booking). So florence in October does not “discount” the official ticket: it discounts queues and hotels, not the museum sticker.
What really changes:
- April–October and long weekends: Uffizi/Cupola slots sell out weeks ahead.
- First Sunday of the month: state museums free — long queues, no Uffizi priority.
- Monday: Uffizi/Accademia closed — useful to know if you build a short weekend.
- Summer: long hours but 32 °C; Arnolfo Tower may close for heat/rain alerts.

Maximum 7 consecutive nights taxed. Exemptions: minors through completed 12th year, UNIFI students, other categories (patients, severe disability, etc.) on the City site. In October/November the tax weighs as much as in August: it is not seasonal.

ZTL: daytime stable year-round; summer night only in the April–October window (Thu–Sat night). Arrivals by car in October still face the night ZTL until the first Sunday of the month.
What to pack (October–November)
October: layers, light waterproof, already-broken-in shoes — wet cobbles are slippery toward Ponte Vecchio. November: mid sweater, serious packable shell, compact umbrella; for museums shoes that handle 15,000 indoor steps. In both months luggage storage stays useful if you arrive by train with a puffy jacket.

Crowds vs climate: how to decide
If you optimise florence weather October, you accept ~9 potentially wet days in exchange for more humane queues than June. If you optimise hotel budget, florence in November often wins, provided you fill days with Uffizi, Accademia (Tue–Sun), Palazzo Vecchio and exhibitions — not Boboli under a downpour.
Summer: only if you already hold dawn slots and tolerate heat. Spring: wonderful but dear around Easter (Scoppio del Carro).
Sample October week (operational)
Monday: Duomo (Cupola if slot), Oltrarno, San Miniato; Uffizi/Accademia closed. Tuesday: Accademia morning + Bargello. Wednesday: Uffizi (9:00 or 16:00 light band). Thursday: Palazzo Vecchio morning (closes at 14:00). Friday: Pitti/Boboli if dry, else Galileo/Strozzi. Saturday: Piazzale + optional hoho Fiesole. Sunday: if first of the month, free state museums (queues); otherwise rest or Pisa return (€9.80).
In November the same skeleton works, but swap Boboli for a second indoor museum and keep a “joker” day for downpours without guilt. Still book Uffizi and Cupola: rain does not magically free October’s sold-out slots.
Hotels, city tax and Pitti Uomo
Tourist tax from 1 February 2025 does not drop in low season: an Airbnb at €6 per person for seven nights is €42 each in tax alone, on top of the rate. In mid-January and mid-June Pitti Uomo fills 4-stars and centre lofts: if you are not at the fair, shift arrival by three days or sleep outside (tram T1/T2) accepting 20–25 minutes return.
Easter with Scoppio del Carro: rooms around the Duomo rise weeks ahead; better be in town Sunday morning by 10:30 in the square, not “drive through” (ZTL + pedestrians). Calcio Storico (final 24 June): Piazza Santa Croce becomes a stadium — if you hate crowds, visit the basilica another day.
Daylight and photos
Late December sunrise ~07:46 and sunset ~16:40; late June ~05:33–21:01 (US Naval Observatory reference for Florence). In october you still have margin for Piazzale sunset after Uffizi at 16:00; in november dark comes early: move the panorama to early afternoon and leave evening to long-hour museums or dinners. Arnolfo Tower at dusk is fine but closes in rain: it is not the weather plan B.
Transport and ZTL in the month choice
Daytime ZTL the same year-round; summer night (Thu–Sat 23:00–3:00) runs from the first Thursday of April to the first Sunday of October. So early October you can still hit the night ZTL; from mid–late October (after the first Sunday that closes the season) the summer night problem vanishes. Anyone booking a ZTL apartment must have the host register the plate: camera fines year-round on weekday days.
City bus €2.00 from 1 August: in November you will use more tram/bus between rain and museum; the 10-ride carnet at €18.20 can pay. Hop-on: in winter Line B frequencies stretch — do not buy “for Fiesole” without checking that day’s board.
