Pisa — train + Tower

Regional SMN → Pisa Centrale: ≈ 1 h, fixed €9.80 (band 81–90 km). Paper ticket: validate before boarding, journey within 4 hours; digital BER: validity 4 hours from the chosen train’s departure. Fine in Tuscany without a valid ticket: regional regime (€60 / €120 / €360 by timing), or €5 surcharge if you report boarding without a ticket.

Tower: official €20 (opapisa.it); includes Cathedral; no reduced fare (only disabled + companion free); banned under 8; 251 steps, ≈ 30 min; timed slots; free cloakroom for bags. Complete without Tower €11; single monuments €8. On Tiqets Tower + Cathedral resold from €25 — always compare with official.

San Gimignano

Bus 131 to Poggibonsi (or Florence–Poggibonsi train) + line 130 ≈ 20–25 min. Total 1 h 30–2 h. Civic museums + Torre Grossa: full €10 / reduced €8. San Gimignano Pass (civic + Duomo + Sacred Art): €15 / €12 reduced 6–17, validity 3 days (Tiqets resells at €18.50). Duomo alone: €5 / €3.

Cinque Terre and Val d’Orcia

Florence → La Spezia Centrale: ≈ 2 h 15–2 h 30, regional €15.90 (band 151–160 km); then Cinque Terre Express. Train Card 1 day adults: €22 / €29.50 / €35 by seasonal band A/B/C. An organised Tuscany day trip from €49 avoids changes but is a long day (≈ 13 h). Val d’Orcia (Pienza, Montepulciano, Montalcino): without a car you stay on tours (Tiqets from €159) or buses from Siena with more changes.

DIY vs organised: honest table

Example sum adults ×2, Pisa only DIY: 2×€9.80 + 2×€20 = €59.60 return train + Towers, without lunch. A Pisa tour from €59 per person includes logistics but not necessarily the Tower: compare inclusions.

Practical hours and luggage

Coach departure: be at the meeting point 15 minutes early. Evening return: do not book fixed dinners at 19:30 in Florence. In summer three cities in one day means much bus time and little in each square — pick two destinations, not three, if you care about entering monuments.

Luggage: store at SMN (luggage storage, KiPoint from €6) before pick-up. On Pisa Tower and local Duomos strict backpack rules apply.

Pisa only (DIY). Morning regional out, Tower with slot already bought on opapisa.it, lunch in the square, afternoon return. Useful time in town: 4–5 net hours after transfers. Adult budget orientative: €9.80 + €20 Tower (+ optional museum) without the meal.

Siena + San Gimignano (tour from €60–75). The coach optimises 131/130 changes that DIY eats half a day. Walking time in each city: often 1–2 hours — enough for Piazza del Campo and a tower stroll, little for long museums. If you want OPA SI Pass (€14/€16) and Facciatone, weigh Siena as a solo day.

Pisa + Siena + San Gimignano (€64–105). Extreme day: much asphalt, little museum. Makes sense as a photographic “taster”; not as deep culture. Read whether lunch and wine are included: the price spread starts there.

Cinque Terre (from €49). DIY train+card is feasible but fragile (La Spezia connections, summer queues, closed trails). The tour buys logistics; it remains a 12–13 hour day: bring snacks, water, cobble shoes.

What to bring and what to leave in Florence

Bring: ID (Tower and some passes), closed shoes, light jacket for the air-conditioned coach, power bank. Leave in Florence: trolley (SMN storage), next-day museum tickets already printed/downloaded, expectations of “seeing everything.” In summer coaches make motorway stops: do not count them as visit time.

Lucca alone: regional ≈ 1 h 20, €8.90 on the direct — excellent DIY if you prefer walls and a flat centre to Pisa. It does not enter typical Tiqets three-city combos; it exists as a dedicated product at higher lists when paired with Pisa.

Strikes, weather and plan B

Train strike: DIY Pisa cancelled → fall back on 131R toward Siena or a Chianti wine tour if still bookable. Heavy rain: Pisa Tower and Facciatone less pleasant; historic centres stay visitable. Check Trenitalia and AT notices the evening before. If you already paid a non-refundable tour under 24 h, plan B is only reorganising the city day (city tours, museums).
