Opera and concerts in Florence: tickets, prices, hours and what you really choose

Anyone searching opera in Florence must read the title to the end: full opera at Teatro del Maggio Musicale or a tourist arias concert (Three Tenors from €35, Santa Monaca €35 / €25, dinner+concert €80). Real opera: Maggio Musicale Fiorentino

Teatro del Maggio (Piazza Vittorio Gui 1) is the lyric-symphonic house: full titles, ballet, concerts. The Festival (Maggio Musicale) occupies spring–early summer; the rest of the season follows the theatre calendar.

Frequent Sala Grande hours (from official calendar): 20:00 on weekdays, 17:00 on Sunday. Duration depends on the title (examples published per show; some without interval). Off-site Festival events may start around 21:00.

Arias and duets from Traviata, Rigoletto, Tosca, Butterfly, Barber: singers + piano. Again: not a full opera.

Typical timing: entry 20:45, start 21:15, end 22:15 (≈ 1 h of music). Portals sometimes show “VIP / aperitivo” grids: they do not appear on the organiser’s official list — do not pay them as theatre categories. On Tiqets/GYG the base ticket stays aligned at €35 (high GYG rating on the church product).

St Mark’s: reduced opera, price not published by the church

St Mark’s English Church (via Maggio 18) offers reduced-form opera (e.g. Traviata, Bohème, Barber) with 5–6 singers, piano and costumes: the formula closest to a “full title” in a church, but still chamber, not Maggio.

Hours per event (no single timetable): full operas often 20:30–22:30, aria concerts 21:00–22:00, some evenings 18:30–19:30.

Price: the church does not publish a stable online tariff; pages say to see the flyer (“times, costs”). Classictic, Viator and similar are resales: do not treat them as official list. If you need a certain price today, use clear-fare concerts (€35) or Maggio box office.

Other “opera” concerts online

On Tiqets you also see matinées and “Great Italian Opera” / Teatro Nazionale in the €35–45 band, duration 1 h – 1 h 15: same arias + piano/ensemble scheme. Same reading rule: if it lasts an hour, it is not full Aida.

Vivaldi Four Seasons (from €30 on the feed) is an instrumental concert, not lyric: useful if you prefer strings to voices.

How to choose: honest table

Typical pairing: museums by day (Uffizi, Accademia), walking or city tours late afternoon, concert at 21:00. Do not lock a 5 h Chianti wine tour the same afternoon: you return late and tired for stalls.

Three signals you are buying arias, not an opera:

1. Duration 60–90 minutes with no declared interval.
2. Location = church or small auditorium, not Teatro del Maggio.
3. Flat price €27–45 almost the same for every seat (no stalls/gallery).

Three signals of theatre opera:

1. Seat sectors (stalls, box, gallery) with different prices €15–130.
2. Long duration or “interval” in the programme.
3. Sale on maggiofiorentino.com or theatre box office.

If the title is “La Traviata” but the text talks of “highlights” and piano, it is a medley. St Mark’s reduces the title with costume and more singers: closer to a full story, but still chamber + piano; and the price is not on the church site.

Under 30, under 25 and families

Maggio Card under 30 at €15 per ticket is the city’s strongest youth advantage: check renewal vs first subscription. Santa Monaca under 25 at €25 is the typical church-concert discount. At Three Tenors check the listing for a reduced fare: often none. Small children: churches are not nurseries — choose a matinée if billed, or wait.

Two adults + dinner at Santa Monaca (€80 × 2) spend €160; the same sum at Maggio can mean two mid stalls seats or gallery + dinner out. Decide whether you want theatre ritual or a “souvenir” evening.

Before and after the show

Dinner before 21:15 concerts: finish by 20:30. After Maggio at 20:00: restaurants near the theatre or return to the centre by taxi/tram.
