Florence Duomo tickets: Dome tickets, prices, hours, skip the line

Florence Duomo tickets are not a single entry: the Opera di Santa Maria del Fiore sells 3-day passes (Brunelleschi €30, Giotto €20, Ghiberti €15), the nave is free Monday to Saturday, and no official skip the line exists. The Opera lists admitted partners in its FAQ; GetYourGuide and Viator do not appear. If a site promises “official skip the line,” it is not the Opera channel. Complex hours and free nave

Annual closures of the whole complex: 25 December, 1 January, Easter Sunday. Maintenance closures already announced: Dome 16–20 November; Bell Tower 9–13 November (check the Opera calendar before you leave). Dress code in Cathedral and Baptistery: shoulders and legs covered, no flip-flops; at the Baptistery sandals, hats and sunglasses also banned. Does not apply to Dome, Bell Tower and Museum.

Dome, Bell Tower and Baptistery: practical rules

Dome (463 steps) — no lift; ~45 minutes; banned for unaccompanied minors; discouraged for anyone with heart or respiratory problems, vertigo, claustrophobia or who is pregnant. Arrive ~5 minutes early; late max 5 minutes. ID required. Highest point in the city (lantern base).

Bell Tower (414 steps) — 85 m, three loggias + terrace; 45–50 minutes. With Giotto Pass a slot is required; with Brunelleschi Pass no slot within the 3 days. Restoration scaffolding: climb open but panorama partial.

Baptistery — ~30 min. Vault mosaics not visible (“mushroom” worksite); scaffolding guided visit €65 (max 10). Do not confuse with the free Cathedral nave.

Museo dell’Opera — Piazza del Duomo 9; 6,000 m², original Gates of Paradise, Bandini Pietà, Donatello’s Magdalene; free audioguide app OperaGuide. Suggested duration 60–90 minutes.

Firenze Card, Uffizi and itinerary

The Firenze Card does not include Dome, Bell Tower, Baptistery, Museo dell’Opera or Santa Reparata. Uffizi and Accademia are separate passes/museums. Realistic one-day itinerary:

1. Morning — Brunelleschi Dome slot (fresh legs).
2. Short lunch — deposit already done at 38/r.
3. Afternoon — Museo dell’Opera + Baptistery (same pass).
4. If energy remains — Bell Tower (with Brunelleschi, no new slot) or free nave another day to avoid overload.

Do not climb Dome and Bell Tower an hour apart unless you are fit: that is 877 steps combined. Anyone wanting only a “light” panorama should consider the Bell Tower (Giotto Pass) or Piazzale Michelangelo (free, outside the complex).

Practical questions before booking

Decide first whether you need the 463 steps: without the Dome the €20 Giotto Pass is enough. Check the official calendar for grey slots (sold out/closed). Bring ID for Brunelleschi. Dress for places of worship if you enter nave or Baptistery. With small children: under 7 free on passes, but the Dome is banned for unaccompanied minors — consider Museum + Baptistery. Masses: worship entry from Porta dei Canonici (south side), hours published by the Opera; do not use the tourist slot for mass.

How 3-day validity works (concrete examples)

Example: Dome slot on day 2 of the month → the Brunelleschi Pass is valid on days 2, 3 and 4. You cannot enter any monument on day 1. On slot day you can visit Baptistery or Museum even before the Dome time. Each monument: one access only. If you climb the Dome then want to “redo” the Bell Tower twice, you cannot: one access. Free nave vs paid pass: what you actually see

The nave (Mon–Sat 10:15–15:45) is the Cathedral interior with free entry, dress code and a single queue at Porta del Campanile. It does not include Dome, Bell Tower or Baptistery. On Sunday and religious holidays the nave is closed to tourists (worship remains via other doors). If your goal is only “see inside Florence Cathedral” without climbing, do not buy a pass: enter free and put the budget toward Uffizi or Accademia.

The Museo dell’Opera is the piece many underrate: the originals live here (Gates of Paradise, Bandini Pietà) while outside you see copies or different contexts. With Ghiberti Pass at €15 you do Museum + Baptistery + Santa Reparata without steps: ideal with small children, convalescence or simply no appetite for 463 stairs.

VR, terraces and products outside standard passes

• VR “Brunelleschi”: Via degli Alfani 113–117, daily 8:30–17:30, from age 8, sold in the OSMF shop — does not replace the real climb.
• Cathedral terraces: private visits on quote only (commerciale@duomo.firenze.it), not sold online in the passes.
• Bonus Cultura / Carta del Docente: the Opera is a private fabbriceria and does not accept them; it does not join the Firenze Card.

Costly mistakes to avoid on Florence Duomo tickets

1. Buying “Dome only” on a third-party site at €60+: officially the Dome goes through the Brunelleschi Pass at €30 (or the official Dome guided visit at €50).
2. Arriving at the Dome without ID: slot lost.
3. Showing up with a large backpack without passing Piazza Duomo 38/r: you do not enter.

Two-day itinerary without burning out

Day 1 — vertical: morning Dome slot → deposit at 38/r already done → Museo dell’Opera in the afternoon → Baptistery toward evening (check early close on the first Sunday). Day 2 — horizontal: Bell Tower (if on the pass and legs ok) or free nave + Accademia / Uffizi. If you have only one day and also want state museums: Dome at opening, then only one “heavy” museum, not both.

From SMN station to Piazza del Duomo: about 10–12 minutes on foot via de’ Panzani / de’ Cerretani. Hop-on hop-off buses: little use in the pedestrian/ZTL centre; OSMF monuments are done on foot.

Santa Reparata, worship and parallel queues

Santa Reparata (excavations under the Cathedral) is reached from the same Porta del Campanile area: stair in the second right bay, visit ~30 minutes.
